Box Score BREVARD, N.C. – The Newberry College volleyball team notched a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21) South Atlantic Conference victory over Brevard Friday night at Boshamer Gymnasium.
The match moves Newberry to 5-8 on the season and 2-3 in SAC play. The Tornados are now 3-7 and 3-3 in SAC play.
The first set was a back and forth affair in which Newberry hit a match-best .344. The Wolves tied the set at 12-12 before using a run to lead 21-16. Logan Hayward closed out the set with a kill to give Newberry the 25-21 set win.
The Wolves started off in control of the second set, running out to a 7-3 lead. Brevard came back and tied the second set at 10-10. Newberry hung tough, tying the set twice, but the Tornados won set two by a score of 25-19.
The Wolves accumulated a match-best 17 kills at a team in the third set. There were 11 ties and seven lead changes. Hayward posted the final two kills of the set to give Newberry a 25-20 set victory.
Brevard started off the fourth set strong, leading 7-2. The Tornado continued to build up their lead and were in front 14-7. Newberry clawed their way back, as they led the set at 21-18 after using a 14-4 run. The Wolves cashed in on nine Tornado errors to win the fourth set and the match 25-21.
Toni-Anne Whitlow led the Wolves with a match-high 13 kills. Andie Meredith and Madison Darby-McClure each tallied nine kills apiece. Darby-McClure also posted four block assists. Maggie Marsh dished out 38 assists and Hayward collected a team-high 21 digs. Kensley Jordan accumulated 20 digs.
Savannah Cox led Brevard with 11 kills. Callie Chappell recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Erin Barr had 28 assists and Aleksandra Vrvilo had a match-high 23 digs.
Newberry ends a three game road swing against Lenoir-Rhyne (4-8, 2-3 SAC) tomorrow. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
