SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Newberry College women’s tennis team rolled to a 9-0 non-conference win over Converse in the first match of the season Thursday afternoon.

The Wolves (1-0) swept the Valkyries (0-2) in doubles action to start off the afternoon. At No. 1 doubles, Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo shut out their opponents 8-0. The No. 2 pairing of Lucia Davila and Rebeca Martinez won an 8-4 decision, while the final duo of Veronika Vicgas and Kelly McManus recorded an 8-1 victory at the No. 3 spot.

The Wolves dominated singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. At No. 1 and No. 2, Carrillo won 6-2, 6-3 and Maria Gomar defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-1. Davila picked up a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 3 while Martinez won a 7-6, 6-3 decision at No. 4. To close out singles play, Vicgas notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 and McManus clinched the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 6 position.

Newberry will host North Greenville (0-0) Saturday at the Lexington County Tennis Complex. First serve is scheduled to begin at Noon.
