Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – In a game that brought 24 shots from Lynn, the Newberry (1-3) defense stood strong to keep themselves right on the heels of the Fighting Knights (2-2) in Sunday morning’s 1-0 loss.
Jordyn Turner put the Fighting Knights on the board first in the 16th minute of the match on a well placed cross from teammate Alexis Vasquez. Turner finished the match with four shots.
Minutes later, Lynn found themselves on the doorstep again after a strange bounce landed at the feet of Donish Cole, who sped her way past the Newberry defense. But Wolves goalkeeper KodiJean Johnson was up to the task with an excellent save to keep the game at 1-0. Cole had five shots for Lynn, three of which were on frame.
With just 30 seconds left, the Fighting Knights had a chance to build their lead going into the half on a free kick from about 20 yards out. Johnson was in great position in front of the net as the ball landed right in her lap. The Newberry keeper ended the first half with six saves for the Wolves. Korina Martinez was in goal for Newberry in the second half and added one save.
Despite the early goal from Lynn who came off a game against No. 1 ranked Columbus State on Friday, the Wolves’ defenders kept themselves in the match minimizing easy opportunities for the Fighting Knights’ offense.
Newberry will begin conference play this Wednesday Sept. 14 as they take on the Catawba Indians in Salisbury, North Carolina at 5:00 p.m.
