Box Score 2 NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team struggled in the first game of the day against Tusculum dropping 6-0 before they came back in game two and defeated the Pioneers 8-4.
Before the doubleheader, the Wolves welcomed back all former baseball players for Alumni Day. The field was graced with the presence of alumni including Hall of Fame inductees: Roger Hazel, John Horton and Dr. John Hudgens.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Game 1
- The Wolves struggled offensively going 5-for-32 at the dish, sending no one home.
- Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) was tagged with the loss, logging 5.1 innings. DeLee tallied five strikeouts and gave up six runs on eight hits. Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) logged 3.2 innings, tallying four strikeouts.
Game 2
- Derek Olenchuk (Irmo, S.C.) and Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) both were 2-for-4 at the plate and scored one run. Danton Hyman (Prosperity, S.C.), Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.), Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.) and JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) all scored one run for the win.
-Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) crossed home plate twice and went two-for-four at the plate. Olenchuk and Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.) both drove one runner in while Smith and Bass both drove two in.
- Zack Kelly (Daleville, Va.) got the win for Newberry, logging six full innings. Kelly gave up five hits and two runs while tallying eight strikeouts. Tyler Fuhr (Anderson, S.C.) came in to pitch in the seventh going two thirds of the inning. Fuhr gave up three hits and two runs, tallying one strikeout. Robert Westenrieder (Taylors, S.C.) got the save, throwing the last out of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
The Wolves scored had zeros across the board scoring wise while the Pioneers tallied six runs for the win.
Jeremy Glore scored the first run in the first inning on Creighton Wilke’s single through the right side. Wilke then scored himself and Dante Key when he sent the ball over the right-center field fence in the fifth inning.
Tusculum scored its last three runs in the sixth inning sealing the win. Cole Baxley scored the first one on Jeovanny Tolentino’s single to right center. Zack Finchum scored on Dante Key’s single through the left side before Tolentino scored on Wilke’s single up the middle.
Game 2
Newberry took the lead in the second inning with three runs scored. Bass reached on a fielding error by the shortstop sending Schrenker home. Bass then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop before Hyman scored on Olenchuk’s single.
The Wolves tacked on two more runs in the third with Schrenker and Bradley scoring on Smith’s single through the right side.
Sneed and Olenchuk increased Newberry’s lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth crossing home plate when Totherow reached on a fielding error made by the second baseman.
With zero outs on the board in the fifth, Bass singled to center field advancing Smith home for a 8-0 lead.
Tusculum got on the board in the sixth with two runs when Cole Baxley homered down the left field line also bringing Seth DeHaven home. The Pioneers cut the lead down more in the seventh when J.J. Wesley scored on DeHaven’s double down the left field line before Wilke scored for a 8-4 score.
