BREVARD, N.C. - The fourth-seeded Newberry Wolves battled the top team in the South Atlantic Conference but were unable to find the winning edge, as the top-seeded Wingate Bulldogs took a 5-1 win in the SAC Tournament Semifinals at the McCoy Tennis Center on Saturday morning.
The Wolves' season comes to an end with a 16-7 overall record which marks the third straight season with at least 16 wins for the women's side. Newberry has racked up 73 wins in women's tennis in the last five seasons.
Newberry's lone victory in the dual came at No. 2 doubles, where Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers fought to a 9-8 (7-5) win. Wingate took a 2-1 team lead into the singles portion.
The Wolves had leads in a pair of singles matches, but the losses at Nos. 2, 5 and 6 completed before Newberry earned a victory, closing the dual with a Wingate victory.
Seniors wrapping up their career in the tournament were Lamers, who has a career record of 103-75 (47 singles wins, 56 doubles wins) and Vanessa Ortiz, who has a career record of 92-54 at Newberry (38 singles wins, 54 doubles wins).
