CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Despite numerous tight individual battles, the Newberry College women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to No. 42 Queens in the regular season finale at Freedom Park on Sunday afternoon.
Newberry wraps up the regular season at 15-6 overall and 7-4 in the South Atlantic Conference, which puts the Wolves in a tie for fourth place in the conference standings. Newberry is the fourth seed in the upcoming SAC Tournament and will play Lincoln Memorial in the quarterfinals. The Wolves beat LMU 5-4 in the regular season on February 27.
The Wolves' lone win Sunday came at No. 2 singles, where Vanessa Ortiz took a 6-4, 6-3 win. Two Wolves suffered losses in key positions. Elizabeth Williamson - ranked sixth in the Southeast Region - was handed a 6-4, 6-3 loss by Carlotta Nassi - ranked fifth regionally - at No. 1.
Amanda Carrillo was handed her first loss of the season in a third set tiebreak after winning the first set.
Newberry kicks off the SAC Tournament at 9 a.m. Thursday in Brevard, N.C., against Lincoln Memorial.
