Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves held a lead late into the first half, but a run spanning either side of the halftime break would spell defeat, as visiting Catawba College took a 12-7 decision at Setzler Field on Saturday evening.
Newberry celebrated the careers of seniors Majorie Anderson, Jessica Baxtrom, Ajahna Grosvenor and Morgan Raffaele in a halftime ceremony of the final home game of the season.
The Wolves fall to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in South Atlantic Conference action heading into next Saturday's season finale at nationally-ranked Queens.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The game was fairly even statistically, as Catawba only held a 25-20 advantage in terms of shots taken.
- Grosvenor scored two goals on her Senior Day and freshman Rachel Dillon also netted a pair.
- Maddie Campbell, Alexis Kahler and Naomi Killian also scored once apiece.
- Anderson and Katie Thompson each picked up three ground balls.
- Brandy Bowman made eight saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Newberry limited Catawba's chances in the first 29 minutes of the game, as Bowman made four saves, with three shots missing the target and two finding the goal.
Killian scored Newberry first goal at 25:07 of the first half to tie the game at 1-1 and Grosvenor's goal on an assist from Helen Kuhn at the 10:54 mark gave Newberry a 3-2 lead.
While the Wolves were unable to build on that lead, they were also able to keep Catawba at bay until the final minute of the half, when the guests' Alyssa Corace scored on consecutive free position shots to give CatU a 4-3 halftime advantage.
Catawba scored three times in quick succession in the opening five minutes of the second half, suddenly pushing a lead to 7-3. Campbell and Kahler scored from free positions, cutitng the lead to 7-5 with 20 minutes remaining in regulation.
The visitors scored three straight goals over the next 10 mintes to push their lead to 10-5 before Dillon scored with 9:40 to play. Catawba then scored directly off the draw twice to make it 12-6 with just under nine minutes remaining.
Newberry missed on four shots before Grosvenor closed out the scoring with 27 seconds remaining.
