Newberry storms back to take 10-9 win in SAC opener over LMU

HARROGATE, Tenn.  - The Newberry Wolves scored the game's final four goals to erase a three-goal second half deficit and defeat the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters by a 10-9 score at the LMU Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry moves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the South Atlantic Conference with the win. The Wolves head to Murfreesboro, N.C., for an early Spring Break set. On Monday, Newberry plays host school Chowan, followed by a Tuesday neutral site game against UVa-Wise.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • A trio of Wolves scored two goals apiece - Jessica BaxtromKatie Thompson and Rachel Dillon.
  • Olivia Knight dished out two assists, including one on the game-winner.
  • Goalkeeper Brandy Bowman made seven saves and picked up four ground balls. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Kylee Shoop started the game's scoring with a goal less than a minute into the game and Newberry would push the lead ahead to 5-2 in the opening 12 minutes.

LMU came back with a three-goal rally and scored the final two goals of the opening half. Amara Moss netted a goal with six seconds left in the period to give the hosts a 7-6 halftime lead.

The Railsplitters scored the first two goals of the second half before the Wolves howled back. Helen Kuhn scored off of an Ajahna Grosvenor assist at the 23:14 mark, Dillon scored unassisted at the 22:24 mark and Alexis Kahler tied the game with an unassisted marker at the 15:49 mark.

Newberry took the 10-9 lead on Baxtrom's goal off of a Knight assist at the 13:42 mark and then looked to keep the advantage. The Wolves were unable to score any insurance goals, but a save by Bowman on a shot by Amara Moss with 1:23 to go resulted in a ground ball pick up by Thompson and Newberry was able to hold on and win.
