Wolves tripped up by Brevard, 16-10

NEWBERRY - The visiting Brevard Tornados went on a 6-1 surge in the second half to push by the Newberry Wolves in South Atlantic Conference action at Setzler Field by a 16-10 score Wednesday afternoon.

Newberry falls to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in SAC action, while Brevard is now 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the league. Newberry closes out a four-game homestand by hosting Emmanuel on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne the next afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Rachel Dillon scored four goals for the Wolves, leading six different players on the scoresheet.
  • Jessica Baxtrom scored two goals.
  • Newberry was outshot 32-22. Brevard's Caitlyn Nemeth scored seven goals for the Tornados.
  • Katie Thompson picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers. 
  • Brandy Bowman made 11 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Brevard jumped out to a 4-1 in the opening 12 minutes of the contest before both teams settled in. Goals by Baxtrom at the 11:02 mark and Alexis Kahler at the 7:15 mark cut the guests' lead to 4-3.

After two goals by Brevard, Newberry responded with two more goals by Dillon with 4:00 and 3:24 to play. Ajahna Grosvenor scored with 41 seconds remaining in the half to make it an 8-6 Brevard lead at halftime.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Brevard scored four goals while Dillon's marker with 25:58 to go was Newberry's only goal in that span. Brevard led 12-7 when Maddie Campbell scored with 18:06 on the clock.

Brevard scored four straight goals to push its lead to 16-8 with 9:52 to go. Newberry charged back with goals by Baxtrom at 5:41 and Dillon at 5:12, cutting the lead to 16-10. Newberry had two shots saved in the final five minutes to thwart a comeback attempt.
