HILTON HEAD ISLAND - Newberry College senior Fernando Espana notched his 100th career win, as the Wolves took an 8-1 win over St. Joseph's (Ind.) at Hilton Head Island HS on Friday afternoon.
Newberry moves to 16-1 overall on the season and plays Chowan at 8 a.m. Saturday in the finale of the Wolves' annual Spring Break beach trip.
Espana won his singles match at No. 1 by his opponent's retirement in the second set and he teamed up with Fernando Tous for a tight 9-8 (7-5) win at No. 1 doubles.
The native of Alcalá de Henares, Spain, now has a 54-26 doubles record and a 46-34 singles record, giving him a combined 100-60 record in his Newberry career.
On top of the highlight career win for Espana, Jordan Monosky ran through his competition with ease without dropping a game in either match. He won a 6-0, 6-0 match at No. 2 singles and teamed up with Jacob Svantesson for a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
Richard Zeh and Logan Adkins took an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles and Angel Pizarro and Alejandro Feliciano earned big singles wins to clinch the victory.
