Wolves host Coker for last regular season home game

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College women's basketball team hosts Coker College in South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, February 24. Tipoff for the Wolves' last regular season home game will be at 6 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE WOLVES

The team defeated the Pioneers of Tusculum 67-55, on Saturday afternoon as part of their Play 4Kay game. After the game, Newberry honored four outstanding seniors: Samantha Creed, Kirsten Dunsmore, Emily Perry, and Colleen Leung.

For the game, Nicola Handreck finished with 19 points followed by Meg Essex who scored 16 points. Essex also grabbed eight boards and blocked one shot. Creed led the team in assists with six followed by Leung who dished four.

Dunsmore finished with four rebounds, four points, one block, one steal, and one assist. As a team, Newberry shot 71.4% from the free throw line and 42.4% from the field.

LAST TIME OUT FOR WOLVES & COBRAS
Earlier in the season, the team defeated Coker College 86-76.

At the half, Newberry had a 37-30 lead over Coker. Essex led the team in points with 12 while Handreck led the team in rebounds with five. For the game, Essex finished with 22 points, six assists and two blocks. Creed scored 21 points, dished one assist and grabbed two boards. Handreck scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Handreck also had five assists, two steals, and one block.

SCOUTING COKER
The Cobras of Coker College dropped its South Atlantic Conference game 77-53 at Mars Hill on Saturday (Feb. 20).
Jazz Green led the Cobras offensively, pouring in 25 points and hauling down eight rebounds. Mariah Johnson also chipped in 11 points off the bench. The Cobras trailed 38-20 at half, and 64-37 after three quarters. Johnson would score nine points in the fourth quarter as the Cobras won the frame 16-13.

Earlier last week, the team dropped its contest at home 74-66 to visiting Wingate on Wednesday (Feb. 17). Jazz Green led the home team with a 21-point effort, while Elizabeth Kincaid added 11 off the bench.

Coker trailed 35-33 at the half, and Wingate would increase its lead to 10 going to the final frame. The teams traded buckets for most of the fourth quarter, until a mini-run from Coker would give the home team some momentum. A pair of Jordan Dawson free throws cut the lead to 61-54 before Wingate called timeout. Out of the timeout Jazz Green put up a three-pointer, and Morgan Williams hauled in the offensive board and put it back in for two, cutting the lead to five. Coker would hang around the final few minutes, getting as close as four points with one minute remaining.

The Wolves travel to Brevard on Saturday, February 27 at 2 p.m. for their last regular season game.
