SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry College tennis teams continued a strong start to the spring season of 2016 and South Atlantic Conference play with both genders picking up wins at Catawba on Saturday. The men earned a 7-2 win, while the women's squad won 6-3.
The Wolves' run through conference play continues Sunday as they host the Carson-Newman Eagles.
MEN: Newberry 7, Catawba 2
Wins in the top four singles spots helped the Wolves roll to another win in conference play. The day started with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles by Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson and a win at No. 2 doubles by Angel Pizarro and Richard Zeh at No. 3 doubles by an 8-2 count.
Fernando Espana won a 7-5, 6-3 match at No. 1 singles and Fernando Tous took a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2. Monosky won his first set at No.3 by a 7-5 count then rolled to a 6-0 win in the second set to clinch a win.
Zeh won a three-set match at No. 6 and Svantesson won a pro set match at No. 4.
The Wolves move to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the South Atlantic Conference with the win.
WOMEN: Newberry 6, Catawba 3
A pair of strong wins at the No. 1 and 2 doubles spot started another Wolves win, as the scarlet and gray moved to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 1 and Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers eased to an 8-2 win at No. 2.
In singles action, Williamson won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and Carrillo won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. The match was clinched with Lamers' 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4. Rebeca Martinez won a 6-3, 6-4 match at No.5 .
