Wolves host Tusculum for senior day and Play 4Kay on Saturday

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College women's basketball team hosts Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon. The team will honor their four seniors: Samantha CreedEmily PerryKirsten Dunsmore, and Colleen Leung as part of their senior day. The game is also the Wolves' Play 4Kay game to support Breast Cancer Awareness.

PLAY 4KAY
Play 4Kay is named after legendary coach Kay Yow, who fought a courageous battle against breast cancer to build a platform dedicated to improving and extending the lives of cancer patients. Coach Yow's vision for the fund is not only to raise funds for cancer research but also to enrich coach's lives by serving others. After three recurrences of the disease, Coach Yow passed away on January 24, 2009. 
To date, the fund has contributed $5.18 million in support of women's cancer research.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE WOLVES
The team fell to the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University 60-41 in South Atlantic Conference play, on Wednesday night.

At the half, Newberry was shooting 100% from the free throw line and 36.8% from the field. Creed led the team in points with four while Dunsmore grabbed four boards.

For the game, Shelby Britten finished with eight points and one assist. Perry finished with seven points and rebounds while Meg Essex grabbed six boards and scored two points. As a team, the Wolves scored 90.9% from the line. and 34.9% from the field.

LAST MEETING WITH TUSCULUM
Earlier in the season, the team defeated Tusculum 61-48.

Going into the third quarter Newberry led 24-21 with Nicola Handreck leading the team with nine points. Essex scored six followed by Hannah Lepaio who scored four points. Dunsmore led the team in rebounds with six and Samara Hill led the team in assists with five.

For the game, Handreck finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Essex scored 13 points and grabbed six boards. Dunsmore finished with 10 rebounds, four assists and four points.

SCOUTING TUSCULUM
Shynese Whitener scored a game-high 22 points to lead four players in double figures as Tusculum College defeated Carson-Newman University 64-55 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action.

Kasey Johnson posted her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Pioneers (12-10, 10-9 SAC) snapped a five-game losing streak to the Eagles (16-9, 10-9 SAC), who were ranked eighth in this week’s NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings. Johnson, who had a career-high 24 points in the Pioneers’ win over Coker on Saturday, shot 7-for-13 from the field and matched Kristen McMillion for the game high in rebounds with 11.

Maelyn Head added a season-high eight rebounds to go along with 12 points, while Sydney Wilson also reached double figures for the Pioneers with 11 points. With two steals in the game, Whitener increased her career total to 205 thefts and moved into sole possession of fifth place on the Tusculum all-time list. The senior has at least one steal in 23 of her last 24 games and has scored in double figures in 30 of her last 33 contests
