Newberry lacrosse kicks off fifth season Saturday

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College women’s lacrosse team kicks off its fifth season of competition this Saturday, welcoming some familiar faces home when the St. Andrews Knights come calling.

LOOKING AT THE WOLVES

  • Newberry is predicted to finish seventh in the South Atlantic Conference following a 5-10 (2-6 SAC) record last year.
  • The Wolves have two preseason all-SAC selections.
    • Jessica Baxtrom was a first team preseason all-conference pick after earning the third-highest goal total in the young program’s history with 42 goals scored in 2015. Baxtrom finished with seven assists to give her a total of 49 points. She averaged 3.27 points per game for the Wolves’ 15. She also ranked sixth in the conference in goals scored and 10th in total points. Baxtrom was named First Team All-Conference last season.
    • Katie Thompson was named second team preseason all-conference. Thompson scooped up 40 ground balls which is tied for second in Newberry history during the 2015 season. Thompson also caused 23 turnovers on the year. Despite playing defense, Thompson also was able to score nine goals on the season and also had one assist for a total of 10 points. She finished 16th in the SAC in ground balls and sixth in caused turnovers. Thompson was named Second Team All-Conference last season.
  • This is the first of three consecutive home games to start the season for Newberry. The Wolves play 10 home games this year.

THE KNIGHTS

  • Saint Andrews struggled in a season opening 13-0 loss at North Greenville.
  • The Knights are led by a pair of Newberry alumni. Head coach Alex Hatch played goalie for three seasons for the Wolves, while assistant coach Tricia Powell also played for the Wolves in the infancy of the program
  • This is the second meeting between the two teams all-time.
    • Newberry won an 18-8 game in 2013 at SAU.
