Wolves roll to 11-5 win over King on Saturday night

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College baseball team ended the second day of the Newberry Round Robin 2-0 after defeating King 11-5, on Saturday night.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) went 4-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in one. Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in two and scoring three runs.
  • Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.), Jacob Bass (North Augusta, S.C.), Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.), Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.), and Bradley Nichols (Winter Springs, Fla.) all scored one run each.
  • Zack Kelly (Daleville, Va.) took the win for Newberry on the bump, pitching 5.0 innings. Kelly gave up four runs and seven hits while tallying nine strikeouts. The win was Kelly’s second victory of the season thus far.
  • John Mason Reynolds (Taylors, S.C.) pitched 3.0 innings, tallying three strikeouts and giving up one run. Cody Ezzell (Greensboro, N.C.) tossed 1.0 inning, giving up two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Bradley started the scoring off for the Wolves in the first inning scoring off Gonzalez’s triple to right center.  Gonzalez was then sent home when Smith singled to left center. Smith scored Newberry’s last run of the inning when Jason Taylor (Woodruff, S.C.) singled through the left side.

King cut Newberry’s lead to 3-2 when Dylan Sligh and Tyler Bailey scored off Anthony Hunt’s double to left center. The Wolves answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second scored by Nichols and Bradley. Nichols scored off Bradley’s RBI single before Bradley scored off Gonzalez’s double to right center.

Newberry increased its lead to 6-2 when Totherow stole home in the third inning. Newberry scored again in the fourth when Kosch hit a sacrifice fly to left field sending Bass home. The Wolves kicked their lead to 8-2 when Smith doubled to center field scoring Gonzalez.

King scored two runs in the fifth when Hecken doubled to left center sending Keister and Hunt home. King cut Newberry’s lead to 8-5 in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Newberry sealed the 11-5 win in the eighth inning when Kosch, Bradley and Gonzalez scored one each.

UP NEXT
Newberry will end the Round Robin with a game on Sunday, February 14 against Young Harris at 3:30 p.m.
