Box Score NEWBERRY- The Newberry College women’s basketball team fell to the Indians of Catawba College 64-45 in South Atlantic Conference play, on Wednesday night.
With the loss, Newberry falls to 12-11 overall and 11-6 in the South Atlantic Conference while Catawba improves to 13-10 overall and 10-7 in the SAC.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- At the half, Meg Essex led the team with six points and three rebounds. Colleen Leung scored five points, dished one assist and grabbed one rebound.
- For the game, Essex finished with 14 points, five boards, six blocks, and one assist. Nicola Handreck finished with eight points, seven boards, one assist, and one steal. Samantha Creed ended the game with six points, two rebounds, one block, and five assists.
- Newberry shot 100% from the free throw line and 33.9% from the field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Newberry got on the board first with a layup from Essex at the 9:40 mark. Catawba had a 12-2 lead until the 3:06 mark when Hannah Lepaio hit a layup to cut the Indians’ lead to 12-4. Lepaio scored again with another layup off a pass from Creed with 1:57 left in the quarter.
Leung ended the first quarter for Newberry by draining a 3-pointer with 1:12 left. Going into the second quarter the Wolves were down 17-9.
Second Quarter
The Wolves were quiet on offense until there was 6:58 left in the quarter. Essex finished a pass from Leung for a layup to cut the lead to 24-11.
Essex scored another layup off a pass from Creed with 3:12 left until the third quarter. Samara Hill got on the board with a layup off a pass from Kirsten Dunsmore with 1:28 left.
Third Quarter
Going into the third quarter the Wolves were down 36-17. Essex put the Wolves on the board early in the quarter making a layup just 56 seconds in. Two minutes later (7:06) Essex scored yet another layup off a pass from Creed before she hit her third of the quarter at 4:29.
Creed cut Catawba’s lead to 38-26 by draining a 3-pointer with 3:32 left until the final quarter. Jaya Schultz finished the quarter with a layup to make the score 41-28 in the favor of Catawba.
Fourth Quarter
Newberry scored 17 points in the final quarter of play with Handreck scoring eight. Creed started the quarter at 9:44 with a 3-pointer off a pass from Essex to put the Wolves just 10 points behind Catawba (41-31). Emily Perry got on the board with a layup at the 8:40 mark followed by a layup from Essex at 7:30.
Handreck started her eight point run at the 6:15 mark with a 3-pointer off a pass from Dunsmore. Handreck scored her second 3-pointer of the game at the 4:32 mark followed by a layup with 2:30 left. Leung ended the game for Newberry with two free throws after being fouled by Zhaquondalee Greer with 1:33 left.
