Wolves head to Pembroke with ECAC title on the line

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College Wolves will battle for the first-ever Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Wrestling League title Thursday night when they visit the UNC Pembroke Braves.

Newberry and UNCP each bring a 4-0 ECAC record into the dual, which has been one of the most hotly contested matchups in the Southeast over the years.

IN THE RANKINGS

  • Newberry moved up three spots in the regional rankings, which were released Wednesday. Newberry is now third in Super Region II.
  • UNC Pembroke is ranked ninth in the region.
  • The Wolves have seven grapplers ranked in the top six of their weight class in the region.
  • The Braves have three regionally ranked wrestlers.
  • New national rankings are expected to be released Thursday evening, just before the dual begins.
    • In those rankings, Newberry's Huston Evans at 184 lbs. and UNC Pembroke's Blaze Shade at 174 lbs. are expected to be ranked nationally.

DUAL NOTES

  • This will be the 12th dual between the Carolinas rivals, with Newberry holding a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series.
  • UNC Pembroke upset the Wolves 18-15 in Newberry's last visit to Robeson County for a dual in 2014.
    • That was Newberry's last loss against a regional opponent.

CONFERENCE TITLE ON THE LINE

  • The winner of Thursday's dual will be in the driver's seat for the ECAC championship at 5-0.
  • Coker is in third place, having completed its conference schedule at 4-2 with losses to Newberry and UNCP.
  • UNC Pembroke closes its ECAC schedule on Tuesday at Limestone (3-2 ECAC), with Newberry wrapping up the league schedule on Wednesday against King (0-5 ECAC).
