Box Score Harrogate, Tenn. - The Newberry College women's basketball team (7-3, 3-3) dropped the final game of 2016 to the No. 11 ranked Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters (11-0, 6-0) by a final of 79-53 at Tex Turner Arena on Saturday afternoon.
After a Shelby Britten jumper early in the fourth quarter, Newberry cut the Railsplitter lead to 14. Lincoln Memorial would respond with a 20-4 run in the next seven minutes to continue what has been a stellar season for a Railsplitters team who was picked to finish 5th in the South Atlantic Conference at the beginning of the season.
Four Lincoln Memorial starters ended the game in double figures with Preseason First Team All-SAC player, Megan Pittman, leading the way with 14 points. The senior also collected nine rebounds on the afternoon, nearly notching her first double-double of the season.
Britten led all scorers in the game tallying 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Samara Hill added 13 points for the Wolves, though it would be just the second time this season that Newberry has failed to net at least three starters in double figures.
Meg Essex was limited on the afternoon after finding herself in foul trouble, causing Newberry head coach Sean Page to call on his bench early on. The sophomore center finished the game with six points in 16 minutes.
Newberry will play again on Wednesday, Jan. 4 when they hit the road to play Lenoir-Rhyne. Tip-off will be at 6:00 p.m.
