NEWBERRY – The third-seeded Newberry College volleyball team (19-11) will host sixth-seeded Catawba (16-12) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship. The winner of Tuesday's contest advances to the SAC Tournament semifinals to face the winner of No. 2 Lincoln Memorial and No. 7 Lenoir-Rhyne at 6:30 on Friday in Wingate, N.C.
Newberry and Queens turned in identical 16-6 conference records. The Wolves broke the tie and earned the No. 3 seed with its 1-1 record vs. Wingate as Queens went 0-2 against the Bulldogs.
Newberry swept Catawba 3-0 in the regular season finale at Eleazer Arena on Saturday. Madison Darby-McClure posted 10 kills and Toni Anne-Whitlow notched 10 kills off the bench. Maggie Marsh had a double-double with 31 assists and 16 digs. Kensley Jordan recorded 17 digs for Newberry.
The Wolves dropped the first meeting against Catawba on Oct. 8th in five sets. The Wolves led 8-4, but Catawba tied the fifth set at 9-9. Andie Meredith’s kill tied the set at 13-13. The set was tied again at 14-14 but Catawba scored the final two points to win the match.
Hayward is fifth in the South Atlantic Conference with 3.23 kills per set. The senior notched her 1,000th career kill earlier this season. Marsh is second in the SAC with 10.00 assists per set. The sophomore has won two SAC Specialist of Week honors this season setting up the Newberry attack.
Meredith Furr of Catawba is fourth in the conference with 5.46 digs per set. Rachel Stanford is third with 9.94 assists per set and Bri Howard’s .315 hitting percentage ranks second in the SAC.
Newberry earned the No. 3 seed in this year’s tournament, its highest seed since earning the No. 4 seed in 2007 Tournament.
After the quarterfinal matchups are played at the highest seeds, Wingate University will host the semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday.
