Box Score NEWBERRY – The Newberry College volleyball team swept Catawba 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena. With the win, Newberry has earned the third seed in the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship and will host a quarterfinal matchup against Catawba.
Madison Darby-McClure posted 10 kills and Toni Anne-Whitlow notched 10 kills off the bench. Maggie Marsh had a double-double with 31 assists and 16 digs. Kensley Jordan notched 17 digs for Newberry.
Newberry (19-11, 16-6 SAC) ran out to an 8-5 lead in the first set. Catawba (16-12, 13-9 SAC) tied the set at 11-11 and then the set was still tied at 20-20. Whitlow’s kill capped a 5-1 run to give the Wolves the 25-21 set win.
Newberry once again got off to a good start, leading 7-3. Catawba pulled within two at 14-12. Newberry used a 7-2 run to lead 21-14. The Wolves went on to win the set, 25-17.
After a back and forth beginning of the third set, Newberry led 14-7. Catawba rallied to pull within 17-14. Newberry eventually shut the door on Catawba’s rally to win the third and final set, 25-19. Newberry hit a match-best .255 in the final set.
Alex Hopper tallied nine kills for Catawba. Rachel Stanford collected 25 assists and Meredith Furr recorded 30 digs.
Newberry will host Catawba next Tuesday for a South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship Quarterfinal matchup at Eleazer Arena.
