Box Score NEWBERRY – The Newberry College volleyball team earned a thrilling 3-2 (25-17, 25-20, 17-25, 22-25, 15-13) victory over Queens University of Charlotte on Senior Day Friday night at Eleazer Arena.
Madison Darby-McClure had a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs. Logan Hayward also notched a double-double with 13 kills and 19 digs. Toni-Anne Whitlow recorded 14 kills. Maggie Marsh dished out 48 assists and Mary Siebert tallied 27 digs.
The first set was back and forth before Newberry (18-11, 15-6 SAC) notched a 14-8 lead. The Wolves continued to hold the lead the rest of the way, winning the first set by a score of 25-17.
Newberry once again ran out to a 7-3 lead in set two. Queens (19-7, 16-5 SAC) tied the set at 12-12. Whitlow’s kill put Newberry in front 21-17 after a 9-5 spurt. The Wolves notched a 25-20 set two victory. Newberry hit a match-best .290 in the frame.
The third set was tied nine times before Queens led 12-10. The Royals posted an 8-3 run, going on to win set three, 25-17. Both teams combined for 17 errors in the period.
The Wolves led 10-5 early in the fourth set. Queens used a 9-4 rally to tie the set at 14-14. The set was tied again at 20-20. Queens led 23-21 as Alexis Bryant’s kill pulled Newberry within one. The Royals notched the next three points to forth a fifth set.
The fifth set was tight once again as the teams were tied at 7-7. Back-to-back kills by Hayward gave Newberry a 10-8 lead. Queens tied the set at 10-10 before McClure’s kill put Newberry in front 12-10. Whitlow had yet another kill for a 14-12 lead. An attack error gave Newberry the thrilling 15-13 set five victory.
Rebecca Cochran recorded 19 kills for Queens. Sydney Kunz had 49 assists and Megan Mancini had 39 digs.
Newberry wraps up the regular season against Catawba (16-11, 13-8 SAC) tomorrow at Eleazer Arena. The match is scheduled to begin at Noon.
