Box Score NEWBERRY – The Newberry College volleyball team (16-10, 13-5 SAC) set a new school record for most South Atlantic Conference wins in a season after sweeping Lenoir-Rhyne (7-16, 5-11 SAC) 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.
Logan Hayward posted a double-double of 14 kills and 20 digs. Madison Darby-McClure and Sidra Triplett notched eight kills apiece. Maggie Marsh dished out 33 assists and Kensley Jordan collected 23 digs.
In the first set, Newberry ran out to a 7-3 lead. Lenoir-Rhyne pulled within 13-10 but Newberry controlled the rest of the set to win, 25-19.
The Bears had a slim 10-8 lead in the beginning of the second set. Newberry continued to chip away at the Lenoir-Rhyne lead and tied the set at 22-22. The Wolves pulled ahead 24-23 and Hayward notched the kill to give Newberry the 25-23 set two victory. Newberry hit a match-best .229 in the set.
After the third set was tied at 4-4, Newberry went on a 6-1 run to lead 10-5. The Wolves once again controlled the remainder of the set as Hayward recorded the final kill to win the final frame, 25-18.
Emily Steele had seven kills for the Bears. Kathryn Sizemore collected 20 assists and Jillian Born recorded 16 digs.
Newberry will travel to Mars Hill (6-18, 5-12 SAC) next Friday. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
