Box Score NEWBERRY – The Newberry College volleyball team (15-10, 12-5 SAC) moved its winning streak to six games after sweeping Brevard (5-19, 4-13 SAC) 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-17) Friday night at Eleazer Arena. Newberry now has 12 South Atlantic Conference wins on the season, tied for the most SAC wins on record for the program.
Logan Hayward and Alexis Bryant recorded nine kills apiece for Newberry. Madison Darby-McClure and Toni-Anne Whitlow each tallied eight kills. Maggie Marsh dished out 31 assists and Kensley Jordan recorded 13 digs. Newberry as a team had a .327 hitting percentage.
Brevard went ahead early with a 6-3 lead in the first set. Newberry rallied to tie the set at 7-7 and once again at 11-11. The Wolves used a massive 14-3 run to win the set, 25-14. Newberry was aided by six Brevard errors in the set.
Newberry jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set. Brevard tied the set at 7-7 and pulled ahead to lead 13-11. The Tornados continued to lead before the Wolves tied the frame at 23-23 after Darby-McClure’s kill. Darby-McClure then tallied the final two kills for Newberry to win the set, 25-23.
Newberry ran out to a 10-5 lead in the third set. Brevard never threatened in the final frame as Newberry swept the Tornados after winning the final set, 25-17. The Wolves hit a match-best .417 in the set as they totaled 17 kills and only recorded two errors in the frame.
Callie Chappell recorded 10 kills for Brevard. Erin Barr tallied 26 assists and 10 digs.
Newberry puts its six-game winning streak on the line tomorrow against Lenoir-Rhyne (7-15, 5-10). The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
