Volleyball Returns to Winning Ways Against Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Newberry College volleyball team (10-10, 7-5 SAC) returned to its winning ways against Coker (9-9, 3-9 SAC), notching a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-21) sweep Friday night in South Atlantic Conference play at the DeLoach Center.

Madison Darby-McClure posted a match-high 13 kills. Logan Hayward notched a double-double of 11 kills and 16 digs and Andie Meredith collected 10 kills. Hayward also had four solo blocks. Maggie Marsh dished out 41 assists and Mary Siebert posted a match-high 24 digs.

Newberry started off the first set strong, running out to a 11-4 lead. Coker pulled to within 14-10, but the Wolves held off the Cobras for a 25-17 first set win.

Newberry started the second set on a 13-4 run and never looked back. The Cobras attempted to make a late rally before the Wolves won set two, 25-17.

Coker ran out to a 9-4 lead in the third set. Newberry rallied to tie the set at 14-14. The two sides remained close before the Wolves gained a little breathing room at 23-20. Darby-McClure’s kill sealed the sweep for Newberry with a 25-21 set three victory. The Wolves hit a match-best .277 in the third set. 

Christen Bragg and Alexis Berles led Coker with six kills each. Bragg dished out 15 assists and Kara Overholt had 21 digs.

Newberry continues SAC play tomorrow against No. 23 Wingate (19-2, 11-1 SAC). Game time from Eleazer Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m.
