FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 18 Newberry Wolves suffered a run of six straight bout losses to No. 11 Upper Iowa, dropping a 24-13 decision to the Peacocks to close out a 1-2 trip to the National Duals on Friday.
The Wolves leave Fort Wayne as a top 12 finisher in the event with a season record of 7-2 and will be in action again a week from Saturday with duals against Shorter and Ouachita Baptist in Rome, Ga.
Newberry got the UIU dual off to a solid start, when Trung Duong won an 11-5 decision at 125 lbs. to put the Wolves up 3-0. Jordan Simpson was edged 4-2 at 133 lbs. to start the Peacocks' big run.
Upper Iowa won six consecutive bouts, picking up bonus points in four. The Wolves still had a mathematical chance to come back before a major decision at 174 lbs.
Despite the overall setback, Newberry closed the match on a high, winning three consecutive bouts. No. 3 Huston Evans closed out a 3-0 day with an 8-3 decision over Dalton Westerlund at 184 lbs. Cody Brundage scored a late takedown to take a 7-5 decision over Ryan Parmely at 197 lbs. and Mike Kennedy powered to a 14-2 major decision over Avery Jacobs at heavyweight.
