Box Score NEWBERRY- The Newberry College women’s basketball team defeated Carson-Newman University 77-69, on Saturday afternoon. Today’s win was the second time Newberry defeated the Eagles this season.
With the win, Newberry improved to 10-8 overall and 9-3 in the South Atlantic Conference while Carson-Newman fell to 13-5 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- At the half, Samantha Creed led the team in points with 14 followed by Hannah Lepaio with six. The Wolves shot 59% from the field.
- At the end of the third quarter, Newberry had a 60-51 lead. The Wolves shot 81.8% from the line and 55.0% from the field.
- For the game, Creed finished with 19 points, two assists and two steals. Nicola Handreck finished the game with 15 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and one steal.
- Jaya Schultz finished the game with 13 points followed by Hannah Lepaio who scored 10 points.
- As a team, Newberry shot 76% from the line and 48.1% from the field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Newberry didn’t get on the board until the 7:51 mark when Creed hit a 3-pointer. Creed drained another 3-pointer a minute later for a 6-5 lead over the Eagles. Both of Creed’s baskets came off a pass from Handreck.
Lepaio got on the board with back-to-back layups starting at the 4:10 mark. Lepaio’s first layup had no assist but the second layup (at 3:31) came off a pass from Emily Perry.
The last six points were all from layups made by Schultz and Meg Essex. Schultz made the first layup with 2:03 left followed by another layup with 1:43 left. Essex finished the quarter with a layup with 1:10 left.
Second Quarter
Creed started the scoring off for Newberry with a 3-pointer at the 8:43 mark. Shelby Britten hit a jumper with 7:27 left followed by a jumper from Samara Hill with 6:52 left. Hill hit another jumper less than a minute later for a 23-19 lead.
Handreck increased the Wolves lead to 36-28 with a 3-pointer at the 1:53 mark. Essex closed out the second quarter with a layup off a pass from Handreck for a 38-31 lead.
Third Quarter
Essex opened the quarter with a 3-point play at the 8:19 mark. Essex made her layup off a pass from Hill but was fouled going up. Essex was sent to the free throw line and drained the shot. Handreck went 2-for-2 from the line with 7:14 left followed by Creed who also went 2-for-2 from the line.
At the 6:20 mark, Kirsten Dunsmore made a jumper off a pass from Creed. Dunsmore then went 1-for-1 at the line with five minutes left.
Schultz went 1-for-1 at the line with 1:41 left followed by Handreck who went 2-for-2. In the last three seconds of the quarter Handreck drained a 3-pointer.
Fourth Quarter
Handreck hit a 3-pointer at 7:22 followed by a layup from Lepaio at 5:29. Schultz was sent to the line at 5:04 and went 2-for-2. From the 2:26 mark to the 2:17 mark, Schultz scored four points. Schultz hit a layup with 2:26 left and then went 2-for-2 at the line with 2:17 left to play.
Britten went 1-for-2 at the line with 1:06 left followed by Creed who went 2-for-2 with 36 seconds left. The last three points scored were all from free throws. Handreck went 2-for-2 at the line followed by Creed who went 1-for-2 in the last 11 seconds of the game.
