Late surge sends No. 18 Wolves to 25-15 win over Coker in ECAC opener

NEWBERRY - The 18th-ranked Newberry Wolves picked up wins in the final three bouts to close out a 25-15 win in ECAC action over the visiting Coker Cobras on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Newberry is now 5-0 (1-0 ECAC), while Coker is 4-2 (1-1 ECAC). Newberry's next action comes on Friday in the first round of the National Duals. Seedings and brackets are expected to be announced early next week.

Trung Duong picked up a key regional win in the first bout of the day at 125 lbs., earning an 11-1 major decision over Charlie Huff. Duong is ranked third in Super Region II, while Huff is ranked fifth.

The Cobras took the lead after a pin at the 133 lbs. bout, but Nick Lankford earned a pin 33 seconds into the third period of the 141 lbs. bout to put the Wolves back on top by a 10-6 margin.

After the Wolves lost decisions at 149 and 157 lbs., Coker led 12-10. Newberry responded with a toughly fought 6-2 win at 165 lbs. by Lukas Gilmore to regain the lead, but a late take down by Coker's Derrick Booth in the 174 lbs. bout gave the Cobras a 3-1 decision and a 15-13 lead with three bouts remaining.

No. 3 Huston Evans fought off Luis Peguero for a 6-3 decision at 184 lbs. to put Newberry up 16-15. Cody Brundage also won a 6-3 decision at 197 lbs., forcing the Cobras to pick up a technical fall or higher in the final bout to upset the Wolves.

Mike Kennedy was having none of that, however, pinning Austin Akins at the 6:30 mark of the 285 lbs. to put the wraps on a 25-15 win to kick off the calendar year.
