Early wins push Wolves to 27-13 win at Shorter

ROME, Ga. - The Newberry Wolves started the dual with a five-match win streak on the way to a strong 27-13 win over the Shorter Hawks in the Winthrop-King Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry is now 8-2 in duals and wrestles Ouachita Baptist later this afternoon.

The Wolves were handed an early 6-0 lead with a forfeit victory at 125 lbs., followed by Jordan Simpson cruising to a 16-0 win by technical fall at 133 lbs. to make it 11-0.

Nick Lankford used a riding time advantage to win a 10-9 decision at 141 lbs. and Zack Dobbins won a 7-1 decision over DeMarcus Thomas. Alex Rice needed just over four minutes to pick up a 16-0 technical fall at 157 lbs. and put the Wolves up 22-0 at the halfway point of the dual.

The Hawks picked up their first win of the day in a battle of regionally ranked wrestlers at 165 lbs., when Kade Kitchens took a 13-3 major decision over Lukas Gilmore to cut the lead to 22-4 with four bouts remaining. After SU's Wally Figaro picked up a win at 174 lbs., the Hawks pulled an upset when No. 3 Huston Evans suffered a 7-3 loss by decision.

Newberry got back in the win column when Cody Brundage clinched the dual with a 15-0 technical fall at 197 lbs. Shorter won at heavyweight for the 27-13 final score.
