Cokers defense stalls Wolves

Hartsville, S.C. – Newberry College falls to Coker College on Wednesday night in Hartsville, S.C. by a score of 86-80.

RECORDS
Newberry falls to 9-6 on the year while moving to 4-5 in the South Atlantic Conference. Coker moves to 6-7 overall and 2-7 in the SAC.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Newberry shot 49% from the field and 40% from the three point marker while shooting 66.7% at the charity line.
  • Xavier Holmes led the way for the wolves offensively with 16 points while Brandon Taylor and Mitch Riggs each tallied 14 points.
  • The Wolves notched 28 rebounds and forced 15 turnovers.
  • Coker shot 48.5% from the field while going 12-14 at the free throw line.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

The Wolves started out slow going down 11-2 until Xavier Hill hit a three to start a short comeback for the Wolves. Newberry tied the game when Brandon Taylor hit a three pointer and made the score 16-16.

Coker went on another run and Larry Cooper hit two free throws to make the score 30-18. The Wolves battled back towards the end of the first half and cut the gap to nine when Amp Moore hit a jumper from about 15 feet out.

SECOND HALF

Coker came out firing in the second half and went up by 15 points when Jalen Watson made a layup. Newberry battled back when Brandon Taylor score five quick unanswered points to make the score 55-48.

Cobras Trey Marshall came right back and scored nine unanswered points with three three pointers to make the score 64-48.

With about six minutes left into the game, the Wolves started to chip away at the Cobra’s lead when Xavier Hill made a free throw which made the score 72-64.

Mitch Riggs went on a scoring run of his own and score six points in a row to cut Coker’s lead to four with just under two minutes remaining.

Coker pulled away at the end and won the game 86-80.

  • Newberry will be home on Saturday, Jan. 16th when Brevard comes into town.
