Newberry picks up four-set victory at Converse

SPARTANBURG - The Newberry Wolves' volleyball team spread out the offensive opportunities and had four players in double digit digs on the way to a 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21) victory over the Converse Valkyries at the Hannah Gym on Tuesday night.

Newberry moves to 4-1 on the season entering the beginning of South Atlantic Conference play this weekend.

Freshman Mary Siebert (James Island, S.C.) led the Wolves with nine kills on 31 chances and tied for the team lead with 15 digs, while Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) had three aces, eight kills and 12 digs.

In the middle, Madison Darby-McClure (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Samantha DeJong (Charleston, S.C.) each had seven kills. Lauren Underwood (Santa Clarita, Calif.) made her Newberry debut with six kills.

South Atlantic Conference Specialist of the Week Maggie Marsh (Charleston, S.C.) passed out 26 assists, while another pair of freshmen were great in the back row, picking up loads of digs. Natalie Willis (Lexington, S.C.) tied for the team lead with 15 digs and libero Kensley Jordan (Lugoff, S.C.) had 13 digs.

The Wolves return home for a pair of South Atlantic Conference matches this weekend, hosting Catawba at 7 p.m. Friday and Queens at 5 p.m. Saturday.
