Box Score 4 NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Wolves' volleyball team went 3-1 on the opening weekend at the Second Annual Newberry Invitational to kick off the season.
The Wolves are next in action at Converse College at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Match 1: Newberry 3, UNC Pembroke 31
The Newberry College volleyball team won their season opener at the Newberry Invitational against UNC Pembroke Friday morning, 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15)
Logan Hayward lead the way for the Wolves with 14 kills and 13 digs while Maggie Marsh had 39 assists. Madison Darby-McClure held the top spot in hitting percentage at .474, adding 10 kills on 19 attempts. Mary Siebert had 12 kills on 37 attempts while Kensley Jordan lead the team in digs with 24. As a team, the Wolves had 47 kills on 142 attempts giving them a .218 hitting percentage. The team also tallied 46 total assists.
Match 2: Newberry 3, Lees-McRae 1
The second game for the Wolves also was a big win for the team as they start off the season 2-0. The Newberry volleyball team beat the Lees-McRae Bobcats Friday night, 3-1 (23-25, 28-26, 25-15, 25-20)
The game started after 10 p.m. and finished late in the night. Logan Hayward had a great game for the Wolves as she led the way with 15 kills. Madison Darby-McClure added seven kills on 20 attempts which gave her a .300 hitting percentage. Darby-McClure was not the only Newberry player to have a high kill percentage as Maggie Marsh had the highest hitting percentage on the team at .429. Kensley Jordan added 19 digs to help the Wolves beat Lees-McRae.
Match 3: Newberry 3, Francis Marion 2
Newberry started its Saturday action with another big win, as the Wolves managed to squeeze past Francis Marion, 3-2 (15-25, 25-17, 25-16, 18-25, 15-10)
Logan Hayward had game high 13 kills and added 16 digs to help the Wolves. Alexus Horton added seven kills to go along with Madison Darby-McClure's eight kills. Players off the bench came up big for the Wolves. Freshman Kensley Jordan helped the Wolves win by adding 17 digs and Alexis Bryant contributed seven kills.
Match 4: Belmont Abbey 3, Newberry 2
The Wolves came up short in their final match of the weekend, losing three out of five to Belmont Abbey (25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 12-15)
As a team the Wolves had a .170 hitting percentage in their last match of the Newberry College Invitational on Saturday night. The Wolves had 51 kills out of 176 attempts in five sets. Freshman Mary Siebert held the top spot in kills for the Wolves with 14. Maggie Marsh led the starters with a .375 kill percentage going three of eight in attempts. Alexis Bryant came in off the bench to give the team seven kills out of 19 attempts.
Newberry fell short in set five by two points. The scarlet and gray were down by six points when the score was at 9-3. The Wolves then got back to back points by Madison Darby-McClure when she got a kill and then a block. This started the run for the Wolves but the team couldn’t complete the job.
