Brevard College drops Newberry College

Newberry – Brevard College drops Newberry College in four sets with a score of 3-1.

The Newberry College Wolves started todays match off hot winning the first set 25-21 but lost the next three sets by scores of 27-25, 25-16, 25-22.

The Wolves have now dropped four matches in a row falling to a 6-6 record overall and a 2-5 record in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC). The Brevard College Tornados is now 3-8 overall and a 2-5 record in the SAC.

Newberry won the first set 25-21. The set was close at first when it was tied at four all. Newberry then went on a seven point run to go up 11-4. With Newberry leading 13-6, the Tornadoes went on a run to close the gap to 16-14. A service error by Brevard’s Aleksandra Vrvilo put the Wolves up 18-17 which would help the Wolves win the set. After the service error the Wolves gained control of the lead for the next six points and went on to win 25-21.

The second set started off with the Tornados jumping out to a 5-2 lead. A kill from freshman outside hitter Mary Siebert helped the Wolves get back into the match. Each team would try to pull away but couldn’t, the score went back and forth with multiple lead changes. The Tornados had a 21-19 lead when a couple attack errors got the Wolves back into the game and took the lead 24-22. A kill by Brevard’s Fatima Gharachorloo tied the game at 24 when an attack error by Wolves Logan Hayward gave the Tornados a 26-25 lead and also the set point. Another attack error gave the Tornados the win.

Brevard jumped out to an early 14-7 lead in the third set. The Wolves tried to get themselves back into the game but couldn’t reach the Tornados. The Wolves lost the set 25-16. The fourth set was tight all the way down to the wire. A block by Hayward and Alexus Horton would get the Wolves the lead at 22-21. The Wolves could not hold on to the lead and lost the set 25-22.

The Wolves were led by Horton on the day who had a double-double with 11 killls and 10 blocks, four solo blocks and six block assists. Hayward also had a double-double with 11 kills and 24 digs. Madison Darby-McClure added 11 kills while setter Maggie Marsh added a third double-double with 38 assists and 13 digs. Freshmen Kensley Jordan added 24 digs to her total.

The Tornados were led by Fatima Gharachorloo and Erin Barr who both had a double-double. Gharachorloo had 22 kils and 12 digs while Barr had 39 assists and 23 digs. Rachel Ruble added 11 kills and nine block assists. Aleksandra Vrvilo came in off the bench and tailed 28 digs for Brevard College.
