Box Score NEWBERRY- Despite a great effort, the Newberry College women's soccer team fell to No. 16 Wingate University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon.
The whole first half of play was scoreless with Newberry taking four shots compared to Wingate's eight. Erika Linch took a shot just two minutes into the game but it was saved, followed by Guadalupe Magana shooting a high ball. Michelle Calmeyn took a shot 19 minutes in but it was high also. Linch ended the half with a shot on goal but Wingate's goalie made the save.
Wingate got on the board first 69:31 into the game. Kimmi Moore headed the ball into the back of the net from a pass from Taylor Leyble. Calmeyn answered back 13 minutes later for Newberry with a header off a corner kick. Lindsay Huber tallied the assist.
Not even a minute later Newberry had to play a man down due to a red card given to Elizabeth Gutierrez. Wingate also had to play a man down for the rest of the game from Brooke Howell receiving a red card.
At the end of regulation time, the score was tied at 1-1. The game went into double overtime where play was quiet until five minutes into the second overtime. Caileigh Apicella scored for Wingate giving them the win.
In goal, Alexis Carrillo made 13 saves playing 94:44 and Rebecca Darley made one save in 15:16 minutes of play. Magana and Calmeyn lead the team in shots with three followed by Linch with two and Serrano with one.
Newberry will host Mount Olive on Monday, September 28 for a 1:00 p.m. game. Going into the match, the Wolves are 1-5-2 overall, 1-3-0 in the South Atlantic Conference.
