Box Score Mars Hill N.C. – Newberry College continued hot streak with a conference win against Mars Hill Tuesday night at Stanford Arena beating the Lions 3-2.
Newberry (6-2 overall, 2-1 SAC) and Mars Hill (3-4 overall, 1-2 SAC) went back and forth all night. Newberry won the first set 25-23, won the third set 26-24 and won the fifth set 15-12. The Lions took sets two and four by a score of 25-21 and 25-21.
The Wolves had a late push senior from captain Alexus Horton (Austin, Texas) as she scored four of the last five points giving the Wolves the 3-2 win.
The Wolves were led by Horton who had 16 kills on 36 attempts giving her a .389 hitting percentage. Also with 16 kills was junior Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) on 63 attempts and adding 21 digs on the defensive side of the ball.
Freshman Natalie Willis (Lexington, S.C.) contributed 16 digs and two service aces. Senior captain Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) and freshman Kensley Jordan (Lugoff, S.C.) came in off the bench adding 22 assists and 33 digs combined. Jordan added to her total with 31 digs tonight. Samantha De Jong (Charleston, S.C.) and Horton combined for five block assists and two block solos.
As a team the Wolves had 65 kills on 225 attempts giving the team a .164 hitting percentage. Newberry had five service aces and 109 digs on the night while tallying 12 block assists.
Newberry will travel to Tusculum on Friday for another South Atlantic Conference battle at 7p.m.
Mars Hill was led by Lauren Hochstetler with 14 kills on 67 attempts and also led by Rebecca Butler who had 14 kills on 39 attempts. Andie Russell added 27 assists to her total in the early part of the year.
The Lions as a team had 57 kills on 224 attempts and totaled 53 assists on the night. The Lions had 10 service aces and 111 digs while adding eight block assists.
