Wolves outflanked by No. 13 Queens

NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves women’s lacrosse team fell to No. 13 Queens University on Tuesday night at Setzler Field, 22-3.

With the loss, Newberry’s record stands at 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the South Atlantic Conference. Queens moves to 10-4 overall and 7-0 in the SAC. The Wolves were able to get goals from Ajanha Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.) and Tessa Davis (Triangle, Va.).

Newberry took an early lead as they broke open the scoring at the 28:38 mark of the first half. Davis caught a pass from Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.) and was able to find the back of the net. The quick start was quieted as the Royals embarked on a 13-0 scoring run to take a commanding lead for the remainder of the game.

Baxtrom was able to score off a free position shot with 2:12 left in the first half and the game went into the break with a 14-2 score. The Wolves also got the first goal of the second half as Grosvenor scored an unassisted goal with 27:47 left in the contest.

Newberry was able to force 16 Queens turnovers and pick up 15 ground balls. The Wolves also went 13-for-16 on clear attempts and 1-for-3 on free position shots as well as eight draw controls being corralled.

Queens held a 33-9 shot advantage and a 19-8 draw control edge. The Royals went 16-for-16 on clear attempts and 4-for-5 on free positions. The foul count was 19-10 with Newberry committing the higher number of infractions.

The Wolves picked up three yellow cards during the course of the game while Queens was given one.

Newberry will close out the regular season on Saturday as they travel to Wingate University to take on the Bulldogs at noon. That game will take place at Irwin Belk Stadium.
