HARTSVILLE - The Newberry College women’s tennis team closed out South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday with a 5-4 victory against the Coker Cobras inside the Coker Tennis Courts.
The Wolves took a 2-1 advantage after the doubles competition. In the no. 1 matchup Amanda Carrillo and Vanessa Ortiz claimed an 8-6 victory against Jennifer Mezei and Sarah Elliot. It was the first win in four matches at the No. 1 doubles match for Newberry. At the No. 2 contest Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers earned the 8-4 win, the duo’s fifth consecutive doubles victory.
Newberry and Coker split the singles matches at three each. The Wolves earned a win at the No. 1 contest as Williamson earned her fifth win in six matches as she defeated Mezei in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. The No. 3 singles match went the way of Carrillo as she claimed a straight set win, 6-1, 6-2 against Jessi Campos for her 17th singles win of the year. Lamers went on to win at the No. 4 match over Elliot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
Newberry ties its win total from last season with 17 wins and they look to earn win number 18 as they host Erskine on Tuesday April 14 in Newberry at 2 p.m.
