Box Score DUE WEST – Three goal outputs by Ajahna Grosvenor and Jessica Baxtrom lifted the Wolves over the Erskine Flying Fleet on Wednesday afternoon, 16-6.
The Wolves continued their five-game winning streak and upped their record to 5-7 overall while Erskine fell to 1-11 on the 2015 season.
Erskine may have gotten the opening goal just 27 seconds into the contest but Newberry took command immediately after scoring five consecutive goals and taking the lead for good. The goals all came within a 10-minute span before the Flying Fleet responded and made it 5-2. The three goal differential was as close as Erskine would come for the remainder of the game.
Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.) led the way as they each tied for a game-high three goals. Megan Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) scored two goals and added an assist while Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.) scored two goals and had two assists. Katie Thompson (Newark, Del.) scored two goals while Tessa Davis (Triangle, Va.), Savannah Ohliger (Grantville, Ga.), Alexis Kahler (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Olivia Knight (Spartanburg, S.C.) all added one goal. Knight also had a game-high three assists.
Morgan Raffaele (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) got the start between the posts and went 52:40, recording eight saves and only allowing four goals on her way to the victory.
The Wolves dominated all statistical categories including shots where they led 37-16. Newberry also went 15-for-23 on draw controls and 15-for-18 on clear attempts on the afternoon. The Wolves converted on 3-of-4 free-position attempts and only committed 15 turnovers.
The Wolves were able to take a 12-3 lead into the break before controlling possession in the second half. Newberry only scored four goals in the second stanza and limiting Erskine to three again en route to the final score.
Newberry will return home as they host Senior Day on Saturday afternoon against South Atlantic Conference foe Lenoir-Rhyne. The draw is set for 2 p.m. at Setzler Field.
