Wolves ready to battle Anderson for SAC Championship

GREENVILLE - The Newberry Wolves women's basketball team will look to bring their first SAC Championship home since the 2006-07 season when they face No. 1 Anderson tomorrow.

RECORDS: Newberry is 20-10 overall and was 14-8 in South Atlantic Conference action. Anderson is 25-3 overall and 20-2 in SAC play.

Newberry is coming off a regular season in which they went 18-10 overall and finished South Atlantic Conference play at 14-8 and finished in third place. The Wolves knocked off No. 7 seed Lenoir-Rhyne, 58-50 on Saturday in their SAC Semifinal game.

Haylee Lepaio had her 11th double-double of the year in the win with 17 points and 12 rebounds. She passed Hall of Famer Tonique Frasier for Newberry’s all-time scoring record that was previously 1,791 points The Wolves placed three players in double figures as Jaya Schultz, Emily Perry and Lepaio all hit the mark.

The Wolves led the entire second half of a closely contested game and finally pulled away thanks to an 8-0 run that started with 9:49 remaining. The Bears kept the game within 10 the entire half but never tied or regained the lead. Anderson, the regular season SAC Champions, defeated No. 4 Catawba yesterday in their semifinal. 

The Trojans swept the Wolves during the regular season 64-59 and the second time 81-72. Anderson boasts three all-SAC players including the SAC Player of the Year in Sierra Simpson. Jasmine Franklin and Lesley Woods both made honorable mention. Simpson is a 1,000 point scorer for the Trojans and Woods is the second most prolific 3-point shooter in Anderson histroy with 238.
