JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn – The Newberry College women’s tennis team escaped with a 5-4 victory versus the Eagles of Carson-Newman University on Saturday afternoon at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
Newberry claimed two-of-three points in doubles competition. In the No. 1 slot Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo defeated Mallory Jackson and Jill Corsato 8-6. At the No. 2 doubles court Tara Lamers and Elizabeth Williamson earned a hard-fought 9-7 win against Brooke Sanderson and Haleigh Chastain. Rebeca Martinez and Kelly McManus fell at the No. 3 doubles matchup 8-4 against C-N’s Patricia Guerreiro and Jennifer Ott.
In singles action the Wolves and Eagles split, three points apiece. At the No. 1 hole Williamson earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Jackson. C-N took the next two matchups, at the No. 2 slot Corsato defeated Ortiz in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. A victory by Guerreiro over Carrillo in three slots 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 earned her the win at the No. 3 matchup.
The Wolves claimed two of the final three matches in singles competition of action. Lamers defeated Ott in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles match. McManus earned a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win in the No. 6 contest. Martinez fell in the No. 5 court over Sanderson 7-6, 6-2.
Newberry returns to action on Sunday afternoon versus the Tusculum Pioneers at noon from Greeneville, Tenn.
