Newberry drops Lincoln Memorial, 17-4

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College women’s lacrosse team kept their four—game winning streak alive as they throttled Lincoln Memorial 17-4 on Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field.

The Wolves improved to 4-7 overall and are now 2-3 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Lady Railsplitters dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-7 in the SAC.

The Wolves dominated from the opening whistle and had scored six straight goals within the first 10 minutes of the contest. Newberry continued to expand on the lead and it had grown to 15-1 by halftime before slowing the pace of the game down.

Seven players tallied a goal in the game and eight players recorded at least one point. Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.) led the way with a team-high four goals to go along with two assists. Ajahna Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Katie Thompson (Newark, Del.) and Alexis Kahler (West Bloomfield, Mich.) each netted three goals.

In goal, Morgan Raffaele (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) got the start and only gave up one goal on the way to picking up her third win of the season. She was able to make two saves. Courtney Reinhardt ( ) also got between the posts and made two saves in 23 minutes of action.

As a team, the Wolves outshot Lincoln Memorial 30-13 including 23-4 in the first half. They picked up 26 ground balls to LMU’s 16. Newberry went an impressive 10-for-11 on clear attempts and 4-for-10 on free-position shots.

The Wolves also only turned the ball over 11 times throughout the contest while forcing LMU to turn it over 19 times with 14 of them coming in the first half.

The Wolves will look to continue their run of form as they travel to face Erskine on Wednesday.
