LEXINGTON – The Newberry College women’s tennis team earned a 6-3 conference victory over the Anderson Trojans on Tuesday afternoon at the Lexington Tennis Complex.
The Wolves only earned one point in the doubles competition at the No. 1 matchup. Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo defeated Ivey Welborn and Rebecca Bruning 8-4. In the No. 2 contest, Mairead Cleary and Alexandra Ebner defeated Newberry’s Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers 9-8 (7-0). Kelly McManus and Rebeca Martinez dropped their No. 3 doubles contest versus Lindsay Gregory and Abigail Gregory 8-3.
In singles competition the Wolves claimed five of a possible six points. At the No. 1 contest, Williamson defeated Welborn in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 2 matchup Ortiz earned a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 over Anderson’s Bruning.
The No. 3 matchup was won by Carrillo as she earned her 10th consecutive singles victory, 6-4, 6-1 over Cleary. Lamers defeated Ebner 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles match. The No. 5 singles contest went to the Trojans as Gregory defeated Martinez 6-2, 6-2. McManus won the No. 6 slotted singles match over Nikkola Wichenko 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
The Wolves return to action on Saturday versus Carson-Newman at 1 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
