Newberry wins second straight, dispatch Cavaliers 12-7

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College women’s lacrosse team won their second straight game after they took a 4-2 deficit and scored five straight goals that stretched across halftime to secure the 12-7 victory over the University of Virginia at Wise.

The Wolves improve to 2-7 overall on the season while the UVA-Wise drops to 0-5.

The Wolves opened the scoring with two goals but UVA-Wise netted four goals during a 12 minute stretch that game them their first lead of the game. With 6:40 left in the half, Newberry finally fought back as Savannah Ohliger (Grantville, Ga.) started a 4-0 run off a free position goal. The Wolves got another free position goal three minutes later from Lindsay Huber (Selden, N.Y.) to make it 4-4 at halftime.

Early in the second half, Ajahna Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Megan Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) and Tessa Davis (Triangle, Va.) all got goals before UVA-Wise could respond and the Wolves took their 4-2 deficit and turned it into a 7-4 lead. The Cavaliers wouldn’t get closer than two goals for the remainder of the contest.

Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.) had a game-high four goals and also had an assist for the Wolves on 12 shots. Huber scored two goals and also recorded an assist. Kenny, Grosvenor, Davis, Thomas, Ohliger and Katie Thompson (Newark, Del.) each had a goal.

As a whole, Newberry dominated the statistical categories and outshot the Cavaliers impressively, 42-12. The Wolves picked up 23 ground balls and only had 16 turnovers for the game. Newberry also had a 12-9 advantage on draw controls.

The Wolves forced the Cavaliers goalkeeper Mel Reilly to make 21 saves during the duration of the contest as they had 33 shots on goal.

Defensively, Huber had a team-high six caused turnovers and five ground balls. Grosvenor caused three turnovers and had a draw control. Four other players had two caused turnovers for Newberry.

Newberry will play at home again on Wednesday night as they have a 7 p.m. start against Young Harris at Setzler Field.
