Box Score NEWBERRY – The Newberry College women’s lacrosse team suffered a nonconference home loss on Monday afternoon as they dropped a game to Saint Leo, 19-7.
Megan Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) scored a team-high two goals on the day and five other players each contributed one. Alexis Kahler (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Savannah Ohliger (Grantville, Ga.), Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.), Tessa Davis (Triangle, Va.) and Ajahna Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.) all scored.
The Wolves (0-7, 0-3) were playing their second game in three days and their second straight contest at home.
Kahler also had two assists to go along with three shots. Defensively, Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.) caused a team-high three turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Baxtrom had three ground balls also to go along with three shots and a draw control.
In goal, Morgan Raffaele (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) played all 60 minutes and recorded seven saves on the afternoon and three ground balls.
Saint Leo started the game strong scoring the first five goals of the match in the first 10 minutes. The Lions scored their first goal off of a free-position shot and the other four goals were unassisted. Newberry responded well and came up with two unanswered goals themselves.
Kahler got Newberry on the board thanks to an assist from Lindsey Huber (Selden, N.Y.). Grosvenor then scored a goal just shy of three minutes later to pull Newberry back to a 5-2 deficit with 17:27 remaining in the first half.
Saint Leo would score three goals in the next three minutes to give the Lions breathing room but the Wolves again got a goal from Megan Kenny to make it 8-3 with 12:14 left in the half. The two teams would go into the break with Saint Leo holding a 12-4 advantage.
The second half started with Kenny scoring her second goal of the game to make it 12-5 but that would be as close as the Wolves would come in the second half. Ohliger and Baxtrom scored back-to-back goals but Sanit Leo scored seven of the last nine goals to make the final deficit 19-7.
The Wolves will travel to Brevard on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game.
