HILTON HEAD ISLAND – The Newberry College women’s tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over Chowan University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wolves earned wins in two of the three doubles matches on the afternoon. At the No. 2 doubles slot Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers earned an 8-3 victory over Polina Novachuk and Straffai Cleveland. In the No. 3 doubles matchup Rachel Lovaas and Veronika Viegas won 8-6 over Jennifer Humphrey and Jessica De Backre. Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo fell to Natal Kamenshchikova and Victori Smolchenkova 9-8 (5-0).
In singles action the Wolves claimed three of the four completed matches as the No. 4 and No. 6 matches were unfinished as Newberry had already clinched the match. In the No. 1 contest Kamenshchikova defeated Ortiz in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 2 match Williamson defeated Novachuk 7-6 (3-0), 6-0. Carrillo earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Smolchenkova in the no. 3 singles match. The No. 5 match went the way of Kelly McManus who defeated Natalia Andrade 6-1, 6-1.
The Wolves return to action on Wednesday morning as they play West Liberty at 10 a.m.
