Newberry falls short versus Queens 6-3

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College women’s tennis team was defeated by the Queens Royals 6-3 at the Newberry College Cannon Courts on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry claimed one point from doubles competition as Amanda Carrillo (Almeria, Spain) and Vanessa Ortiz (Cochabamba, Bolivia) defeated Carlotta Nassi and Melissa Laing, 8-4. At the No. 2 doubles contest Caroline Nielson and Marta Gonzalez defeated Tara Lamers (Maastricht, Netherlands) and Elizabeth Williamson (Canterbury, New Zealand) 8-6.

In singles competition at the No. 1 position, Nassi defeated Ortiz 6-4, 2-6, 6-0. At the No. 2 slot Williamson earned the two set victory over Laing 6-1, 6-2. Carrillo collected the other singles point for the Wolves at the No. 3 position 0-6, 7-6, 14-12. In the No. 4 position Nielson defeated Lamers 6-3, 6-1. The fifth ranked singles match saw Martinez lose in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to Rock. The sixth ranked singles match was won by Hamilton over McManus in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

The Wolves’ women’s tennis team hits the courts against on February 10as they travel to Columbia College with match time at 3 p.m.
