Newberry drops regular season finale to Carson-Newman

Box Score

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Newberry College women’s basketball team dropped their final regular season game to the Eagles of Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon, 75-44.

The Wolves (18-10, 14-8) were done in by cold shooting the entire contest as they only went 16-for-61 (26.2-percent) from the floor. Newberry came into the game shooting the highest percentage in the South Atlantic Conference at 43.2-percent.

The Wolves, who had already cemented a home game for the SAC quarterfinals, were playing in a game between two regionally ranked opponents. Newberry was No. 6 in the NCAA Southeast Regional Ranking while Carson-Newman was No. 8. That poll was released prior to the games that took place on Wednesday night.

Junior guard Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Vic, Australia) was the only Newberry player to score in double figures as she had 15 points, six rebounds and two assists. Nicola Handreck (Heywood, Vic, Australia) had nine points and six rebounds for Newberry.

Carson-Newman (19-9, 13-9) jumped out to a 27-3 lead to start the game and the Wolves didn’t make their second field goal until 10:15 remaining in the first half. The Wolves found the rim inside Holt Fieldhouse to be unkind as they missed their first 10 attempts and went 1-for-14 during Carson-Newman’s run.

Newberry outscored Carson-Newman 12-7 to trim it to 34-15 but struggled to keep it close and took a 42-19 deficit into the break.

The Wolves opened the second half outscoring the Eagles 14-7 to make it 59-33 but the 16 point margin would be as close as they would get. Carson-Newman would push their lead to the final mark.

Carson-Newman held a 38-12 advantage in the paint and 19-11 in points off of turnovers.

Newberry will host No. 6 Lincoln Memorial at 6 p.m. in Eleazer Arena on Wednesday night. The winner of the game will advance to Greenville to play in the semifinals which take place in Timmons Arena.
