NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's tennis team earned its second consecutive 8-1 victory as they defeated the Catawba College Indians on Friday afternoon at the Newberry High School tennis courts.
In the doubles competition the Wolves swept all three contests, beginning at the No. 3 matchup as Rebeca Martinez and Kelly McManus defeated Sloan Kessler and Rachel Rudisill 8-1. The No. 2 doubles matchup had Tara Lamers and Elizabeth Williamson defeat Maddy Henderson and Lauren Sledd 8-0. At the No. 1 doubles matchup Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo earned 8-3 win over Liz Renteria and Kristen Rocko.
Newberry clinched the match with three consecutive wins in singles competition, beginning at the No. 4 singles matchup as Lamers earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Kessler. Ortiz defeated Renteria in the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 6 slot, Viegas earned a three-set victory against Rudisill 4-6, 7-5, 10-7. At the No. 2 singles match, Williamson earned the straight set, 6-1, 6-4 victory against Rocko to give Newberry a 6-0 lead in the match.
The No. 3 matchup went the way of Carrillo as she defeated Henderson 8-3. Sledd salvaged a point at the No. 5 matchup as she earned 8-6 victory over McManus.
Newberry travels to Carson-Newman on March 1 at 1 p.m. for a South Atlantic Conference matchup.
