Newberry loses to Coker in SAC opener, 20-12

HARSTVILLE – The Newberry College women’s lacrosse team dropped their South Atlantic Conference opener to the Corbas of Coker College on Saturday afternoon, 20-12.

Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.) led the Wolves (0-2, 0-1) by scoring five goals in the contest. Newberry had three other players score two goals in Megan Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.), Savannah Ohliger (Grantville, Ga.) and Ajahna Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.).  Tessa Davis (Triangle, Va.) also had a goal and an assist in the loss.

Coker (2-1, 1-0) only outshot Newberry 30-25 and 19 of the 25 for the Wolves shots were on goal. Katie Thompson (Newark, Del.) led the Wolves with five ground balls and also caused two turnovers. Six other Newberry players got credited with a caused turnover. Courtney Reinhardt (Charleston, S.C.) made three saves in goal.

Newberry kept it close in the first half despite going down 2-0 early. The Wolves responded behind goals goals from Grosvenor and Baxtrom and brought the score back to 3-2 with 16:02 left in the first stanza. Coker then outscored Newberry 3-1 and took a 7-3 lead into the break.

In the second half, Baxtrom scored two straight goals with assists from Maddie Campbell (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and Kenny to make the score 8-5 but that was as close as Newberry would get for the rest of the contest.

Coker pushed their lead to 17-8 as they outscored Newberry 9-3 over the next 16 minutes. Newberry finished the game scoring three goals in the final 1:41 to reach the finally tally.

The Wolves will be back in action tomorrow as they play host to Tampa University at Setzler Field with the game at noon.
