Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's lacrosse team dropped their season-opener at home to the Savannah College of Art and Design at Savannah, 18-4.
Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.), Savannah Ohliger (Grantville, Ga.), Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.) and Megan Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) all scored for Newberry in the loss.
After the first four minutes, the score was still tied 1-1 thanks to a Baxtrom goal before the Bees went on the offensive and stung the Wolves with five goals in a little more than a 12-minute span. Two of SCAD's goals early came with a Newberry player serving a penalty for a yellow card. All three of the yellow cards that Newberry recieved during the game led to SCAD goals.
Individually, Maddie Campbell (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers. Katie Thompson (Newark, Del.) had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Lindsay Huber (Selden, N.Y.) also scooped up three ground balls for Newberry. Thomas and Kenny both recorded their goals in the second half. Thomas scored with Newberry trailing 10-3 just a minute into the second half and Kenny scored with the Wolves trailing 16-3 with 6:23 remaining in the contest.
Ultimately, Newberry was unable to recover after going down early despite getting its second goal from Ohliger with 9:51 left in the first half. The Wolves went into the break trailing 9-2. In the first half Newberry had 14 shots while SCAD had 17. Of those, the Wolves had nine shots on goal while the Bees had 13.
For the game, the Bees did dominate in draw controls taking 17 of the 22 opportunities. SCAD scored their 18 goals on 29 shots and had 12 assists. Newberry was not far behind in having 25 shots for the contest with 17 on frame. Newberry's goalkeeper Courtney Reinhardt (Charleston, S.C.) made six saves in net.
SCAD also held a slight advantage in ground balls at 21-19 but committed slightly more turnovers at 20 compared to the 19 that the Wolves had. Both teams were successful for most of the day in their clear attempts as SCAD went 16-for-18 and Newberry went 11-for-12.
The Wolves will play again at home on Wednesday as the Pfeiffer Falcons will come to town. That game is set for 4 p.m. at Setzler Field.
