Newberry knocked off Lenoir-Rhyne at home on Wednesday, 65-44 to win their second straight game. The win moved Newberry’s record to 15-8 overall and 11-6 in the South Atlantic Conference. They remain tied for third in the standings with Catawba who they swept during the regular season.
In the game, Newberry was led by Haylee Lepaio who had 24 points and 13 rebounds in the win. She moved into third place all-time at Newberry in career rebounding. She is also now just 62 points away from being tied for first in career scoring. Zara Pearson tied a career-high with seven assists and she moved into seventh place on the career list and is just five assists shy of sixth place. Samantha Creed had a balanced effort of seven points and eight assists and she is 61 points away from the 1,000 mark.
The Tusculum Pioneers bring in a 6-14 overall record and a 6-11 mark in the SAC. Newberry dominated the first meeting, winning 74-41 on Jan. 3.
Newberry remains first in the conference defensively, only allowing 59.1 points a game and limiting those opponents to just 37.6 percent shooting from the field. After recording 22 assists on 26 field goals against L-R, the Wolves now average 15.2 a game, good for second in the SAC. They also turn the ball over the fewest amount at 15.5 a contest.
With Tusuculum allowing a lot of points and a high field goal percentage, Newberry already boasts the second highest shooting mark at 43.2 percent and are fourth at 32.6 percent from 3-point territory. Offensively, the Pioneers rank 10th in 3-pointers made per game 3.8, 11th in 3-point attempts at 11.7 and 11th in turnovers per game at 20.4. They score 69.3 points a game but give up more a contest as they attempt the second most field goals in the SAC at 62.5
Defensively, Tusculum fouls a lot and rank next to last by commiting 20.3 personal fouls a game. They are dead last in opponents points allowed in a game at 77.6 ppg while letting opponents shoot the second highest percentage from the field at 41.9. Opponents also shoot well from 3-point range at 33.3 percent. They are top of the conference in two statistical categories which are steals per game (9.7) and in free throws made per game (17.2).
